Review - Rockabye, Melbourne Theatre Company

In the world of fashion from the bling bling era there seems to be a new phase emerging in Botoxland and that is to kidnap a child from a third world nation and place it in an environment it is not familiar with under the guise of opportunism.

Or is it merely the present norm of celebrity persona to display such souls as trophies hanging off the forearms as fashion accessories? However noble this act may seem, the featherbrains of the likes of the Hilton femme fatale and The Material Girl, make this procedure not much different to our stolen generation.

This Avenue Q review is brought to you by the letters ‘L’, ‘O’ and ‘L’.

Rated 4 stars

I have to admit I had high hopes for Avenue Q. I hadn’t heard the songs, but I had read articles mentioning song titles like ‘It Sucks to Be Me’ and ‘Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist’ and something told me it was going to be right up my alley. (Or Avenue, as it were.)

French & Saunders review

Rated 3 and half a stars
'Basking in their sometimes-funny-glory'

My friends now think I have terrible taste in movies and I blame French and Saunders. Ever since I saw their ‘First and Final’ tour in Sydney, I have been intently demanding to know whether people have seen Mamma Mia in the hope that I’ll be able to say “ohmygod you should totes youtube French and Saunders’ Mamma Mia rip off.”

World Press Photo Exhibition

Rated 3 stars

We really do live in the luckiest country on the planet. Sometimes it takes weather darker than a Tim Burton movie and a photo exhibition to smash the point home. The World Press Photo exhibition rolls around the globe showcasing the best photojournalism. It is an annual measure of humanity, from the stunning highs to the absolutely horrific lows captured in close up glory....or gore as the case may be.

Shane Warne - The Musical

Over the course of 2 and a half hours I saw a giant dancing cigarette out to corrupt Bindi Irwin, a fat man in luminous Playboy pants and Ricky Ponting as the Devil. Just a run of the mill Sunday afternoon at the Enmore.

Let me start with a disclaimer. I am a cricket tragic. Play the game, watch the game, and obsess about the game. Shane Warne has always been a player who thrilled me, despite his many flaws, and it’s these flaws that are the backbone of this riotous show.

Fall Out Boy - HMAS Tobruk secret show

I’ll admit that I am not the biggest Fall Out Boy fan however, I was never going to say no to a gig on board the Royal Australian Navy vessel, HMAS Tobruk, which was moored at Garden Island in Sydney Harbour. The invite only event, sponsored by Xbox Sounds, was held on Sunday 22 February 2009 with the picturesque Sydney Harbour as the backdrop.

Opening for Fall Out Boy were INNERPARTYSYSTEM and local rockers Slow Down Honey. To be honest, INNERPARTYSYSTEM’s electro – rock was a bit too much for a Sunday morning but there were promising things from Slow Down Honey.

Samson and Delilah

Rated 5 stars

A few weeks ago a friend gave me a free pass to attend a preview screening of a new Australian film, Samson and Delilah. I had no idea what I was seeing when I turned up and after a long day at work I was exhausted and truthfully, a little pessimistic about the hour and a half that lay ahead. I was unprepared for the inspirational power and passion that this story awakened in me.

Russell Brand

Disclaimer - Though this review is penned by a single female, don’t be alarmed. Russell Brand really is hilarious judging by the tears of laughter streaming down the faces of two male companions at a slightly secret warm up show in Sydney.

Why Russell Brand is the ultimate catch -

1. Intelligent - Famous for running off at the mouth, it is somewhat surprising when watching him in the flesh how many syllables he can cram into one sentence. The kid is a dead set genius! A comical one at that.

Coldplay Viva La Vida

Faux French Revolution uniforms and Hollywood marriages aside, when Coldplay took to the stage on March 14 in Sydney, an extraordinary performance was witnessed by myself and the record capacity crowd at Acer Arena. It was epic to say the least.

From the radio-friendly singles that became anthems you couldn't resist, to Chris Martin's jokes in between songs, and the visual effects of pixilated psychedelic paper butterflies and giant yellow orbs that fell from above, the concert experience while exhilarating, warmed me like a warm hot cup of cocoa.

Tim Minchin

I saw Tim Minchin at the Enmore Theatre on 05/04/09. He was incredible. He's not all comedy, y'know... he has a few rants and his jokes are verrrrrry pro-secular (and anti-'we don't really know anything and pharmaceuticals are bad'-hippy, which I perhaps didn't expect) and basically, he's one of the few people generally who I've ever seen speak or joke or sing where I agree with everything he says.
