Review - Cassette Kids

If you’re going to be hot and sweaty, it may as well be for a good reason. Dancing the night away to the sweetly synthed sounds of indie darlings Cassette Kids is definitely the right way spend a balmy/boiling hot evening. The electro pop four-piece from Sydney have just embarked on a national tour, road testing songs from their forthcoming debut album, ‘Nothing On TV’ which is set to be released next March.

Have you heard the hype? It’s huge. While the Cassette Kids are relative new comers to the scene, having only formed in 2007, their impressive sound has seen them touring with the likes of The Presets and Lily Allen, which has no doubt contributed to their professional onstage manner and electrifying live performances. Sure, the first single from ‘Nothing on TV’ Lying Around is as polished as one would expect from a studio recording but their live performance is something altogether - it’s energised, hypnotic and full of life. The Cassette Kids really know how to get a crowd moving. This is good fun. This feels real. This is exciting!

Singer Katrina Noorbergen is made of spicy, strong stuff – her vocals meld well with the bands new wave, post punk sound and her onstage attitude is the perfect blend of confidence and style without the added arrogance that often accompanies those in the limelight. Dancing along with the Cassette Kids own brand of indie pop might cause you to break a sweat, but it’s an unavoidable outcome, their infectious tunes are programmed to get your heart beating. Besides, it’ll mean you’ve earned that cool beer or three...
